23rd State to enter the Union, Maine is the northern most state on the eastern seaboard. Maine joined the Union under the Missouri Compromise of 1820 whereby Maine willingly seceded from Massachusetts and entered the Union as a free-state while Missouri entered the Union as a slave-state. Maine boarders New Hampshire, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Canadian Proviences of Quebec and New Brunswick. The capital city is Augusta, and the largest city is Portland. The state is well known for its catches of lobsters and clams. The state nickname is The Pinetree State.
