parbuckling

Parbuckling is an engineering operation to right capsized ships by rotating them to their intended vertical upright position. The term literally means a rope sling used for rolling cylindrical objects up or down an inclined plane. It is a technique for rotating a large load utilizing a simple 2:1 mechanical advantage system in which the load is placed inside a bight formed in a length of steal cable that creates the mechanical advantage. The largest parbuckling operation in the world to date is the successful maritime salvage project that pulled the huge crippled Costa Concordia cruise ship completely upright in Italy on September 18, 2013.
