The decision to build a cannery set was made for the episode "Aunt Hetty's Ordeal". In this ,Gus works in the cannery. He is involved in a brawl, which leads to an accident where the cannery catches fire.

In later seasons, Olivia and Jasper buy the cannery, which in the final season catches fire again and this time burns down.

In season three, the movie crew used the back side of the cannery set to give Jasper and Olivia a place to live. The Dale house and the cannery became two sets of one.
