domestic violence and rape in somalia
Because women are considered inferior to men in all aspects and have to please their husbands by fulfilling their every request, slight resistance on their behalf could be heavily sanctioned. Also, with regards to sexual intercourse, women who refuse it are raped; even though intermarital rape is not considered as such in Somali society. As a matter of fact, there is a strong culture of impunity with regards to domestic and sexual violence; rapes for instance, are dealt with through agreements between the clans, families or individuals concerned, where a sum of money is often paid or even where the victim and the perpetrator are forced into marriage.
