mnimoseno

A commemoration service in the Greek Orthodox faith during which the priest recites the Trisagion Service. This is a brief service that is chanted and performed by the priest for a person who has departed. A preparation of boiled wheat berry mixed with roasted flour, crushed walnuts, sliced blanched almonds, finely crushed breadcrumbs, sultana raisins, and pomegranate seeds is covered in powdered sugar. The resulting mound is adorned with a crucifix made of confectioonary as well as the innitials of the departed person are outlined usually using silver coloured confectionary. The preparation is brought to church on the Saturday of Souls which falls on two Saturdays before the beginning of Great Lent, the second, third and fourth Saturdays of Great Lent as well as on the Saturday before Pentecost. Each family also gives a list of names of deceased family members to the priest so that they can be read. Basically, we remember our relatives and supplicate God for the forgiveness of their sins. It is also important for the remembrance ceremony to take place on the third, ninth and fortieth day since the death of a person. The blessed wheat berry preparation is distributed to parishioners at the end of the liturgy.
