A postmitotic neuron is a neuron that has exited the cell cycle.

After exiting the cell cycle, cells are considered immature neurons. Postmitotic neurons undergo the process of neuronal differentiation (extension of axon and dendrites, formation of synaptic connections).

Postmitotic neurons also pass through a late maturation phase characterized by increased synaptic plasticity.
