traditions and mores in somalia
In Somalia, traditions and mores contribute to the large scale disregard and domination of women. The country is composed of five major clans: the Darod, Hawiye, Dir, Isaaq and the Rahanweyn, that organise their own politics and cultural laws. As a matter of fact, only thirty five percent of the Somali population is urbanised, which ensures the persistence of traditional practices that often contribute to the important gender issues in the country. What is more, pastoralism is the very basis of these clans' existence, in which traditional agriculture is employed such as livestock breeding and where nomadism is often the case. In this context, we see recurrent disregard for women.
