chandelier bid

A fabricated bid announced during an auction in order to give the impression of greater demand for an item. Chandelier bids are most likely to be used as a way to reach the reserve price on an item: the auctioneer is legally bidding on behalf of the seller and must stop accepting bids once the reserve price has been met. Chandelier bids are so named because when announcing them, the auctioneer may point to the ceiling or other parts of the room as they do not actually belong to a participant in the auction. This practice of "bidding off the chandelier," also known as "bidding off the wall" or "bidding from the order book," is widely known but remains somewhat controversial.
