local structural probes
The deeply penetrating ability of x-rays and their short wavelength, comparable to atomic size, makes them an ideal probe for structural characterization of materials. In addition, many elemental absorption edges are located in the x-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum. As such, x-rays are especially useful for a variety of spectroscopic measurements, providing chemical or elemental specificity, and sensitivity to orbital and magnetic ordering.
