(ASW)approved social worker- the specially qualified social worker who must by law be involved in the decision to detain a person comopulsorily in a psychiatric hospital.The approved social worker has overall responsability for co-ordinating the Assesment of a person who, because of severe mental illness, may require compulsory admission to psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983.(UK)
